Memorial Day is celebrated on the last Monday of May to honor and mourn the men and women who died while serving in the U.S. military. 

Originally known as Decoration Day, the day was first observed on May 30, 1868 to commemorate the Civil War dead. In 1968, Congress changed the observance to the last Monday in May, and in 1971, it officially became known as Memorial Day.
