Benefactors are very special individuals who know the importance of a local, independent, and journalist-led news firm to a community. The old model of journalism supported totally by advertising and subscribers is no longer a viable model. Local news needs to be supported as a public good. Journalism serves as a watchdog to local government and chronicles the narratives of the community it serves. Benefactors are the patron saints of community journalism.
