The Estes Valley will commemorate the 25th anniversary of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks with its fourth annual 9/11 Memorial 5K and Stair Climb on Friday, Sept. 11.

The event will honor those killed in the 2001 attacks while raising money for the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation, which assists the families and colleagues of fallen firefighters.

Participants may walk or run a 5K around Lake Estes, climb stairs at the Estes Park Visitor Center parking garage, or complete both events.

The 5K commemorates New York City firefighter Stephen Siller, who ran through the Brooklyn-Battery Tunnel to the World Trade Center after learning of the attack. He died while helping others.

Participants should gather at the parking garage at 6:40 a.m. for bagpipes and brief remarks. The 5K will begin at 6:46 a.m., coinciding with the local time of the first attack.

The stair climb represents the 110 stories of the World Trade Center towers. Participants of all ages may climb as much as they are able, from one story to all 110.

A remembrance ceremony featuring bagpipes, stories and remarks will begin at 8 a.m. The climb will start at 8:46 a.m., marking the time in New York when the first plane struck the World Trade Center.

The American Legion Riders and American Legion Auxiliary will serve lunch following the events. Participants in the climb will receive a complimentary lunch voucher.

Participation is open to residents and visitors. Donations will benefit the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation, which honors fallen firefighters, supports their families and colleagues, and works to reduce line-of-duty deaths and injuries.
