Law professor to discuss constitutional separation of powers
University of Denver law professor Marty Katz will discuss the U.S. Constitution’s separation of powers doctrine from 2 to 3:30 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 2, at American Legion Post 119.
Presented in partnership with the American Legion as part of the nation’s 250th anniversary observance, the program will examine how the Constitution divides authority among Congress, the president and the courts to prevent any one branch from becoming too powerful.
Katz will discuss the growth of presidential power, the Unitary Executive Theory, the role of independent federal agencies, the effects of gerrymandering and primary elections on Congress, and the courts’ evolving role in resolving disputes among the branches. A question-and-answer session will follow.
Katz teaches constitutional and employment law at the University of Denver’s Sturm College of Law, where he previously served as dean. His scholarship has appeared in the Yale Law Journal, Georgetown Law Journal and Constitutional Commentary. Before entering academia, he practiced employment law and clerked for Judge David M. Ebel of the 10th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals.
Estes Valley library seeks trustee applicants
The Estes Valley Public Library District is accepting applications for a vacancy on its Board of Trustees.
Trustees are volunteers appointed jointly by the Estes Park Town Board and Larimer County commissioners. The vacancy is for a full term beginning January 1, 2027. The board generally meets twice a month.
Applicants should have leadership skills and a commitment to the library. Prospective candidates are encouraged to review the board’s bylaws, governance policies and code of ethics, as well as the library’s strategic plan, at estesvalleylibrary.org.
Applications are due Friday, August 21. Interviews are expected to be conducted in early September. Applications are available at estesvalleylibrary.org/board.
