The Estes Valley Fire Protection District needed less than three minutes Tuesday afternoon to make its next fire chief official.

The EVFPD Board of Directors unanimously approved an employment contract with Kevin Nunn during a brief special meeting, clearing the way for him to begin work on Monday, July 20.

Nunn will be formally sworn in on July 27, before the district board’s 4:30 p.m. meeting at Dannels Fire Station. The district expects to announce additional details about the swearing-in ceremony in the coming days.

Under the employment agreement, the district will pay Nunn a base salary of $155,000. The contract also requires him to establish residency within the fire district’s boundaries as soon as possible and no later than six months after beginning the job.

According to EVFPD Board President Sandra Smith, Interim Fire Chief Warren Jones will remain with the district in a transitional role for about two weeks as Nunn takes command.

Nunn, an Indiana native, has served as fire chief of the North Tooele Fire District in Utah since 2022. He moved to Utah from Tennessee after applying for the position through a national search.

His fire service career began as a volunteer firefighter at age 21 in 1990. Nunn later volunteered in Indiana and Colorado, spending five years working in wildland fire before becoming a career firefighter in 2002.

Nunn began his Colorado public service work with Larimer County Emergency Services in 2001. He later served with the City of Pigeon Forge Fire Department and the Seymour Volunteer Fire Department in Tennessee, holding firefighting, training, leadership, and emergency management positions.

Before taking the North Tooele chief’s job, Nunn worked as an emergency management specialist at the Y-12 National Security Complex in Tennessee.

Nunn holds a master’s degree in emergency management from Eastern Kentucky University and a bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering technology from Purdue University.
