The Estes Valley Voice has removed a guest opinion essay from our website at the request of its author. This was not a decision we made lightly.
As a matter of journalistic ethics, we believe that once an article has been voluntarily submitted, accepted, edited, and published, it becomes part of the public record. Removing published content raises legitimate concerns about preserving the historical record, maintaining editorial independence, and ensuring transparency with our readers. For those reasons, our longstanding practice is to avoid removing published material except under extraordinary circumstances.
In this instance, the author approached us after publication and asked that the opinion piece be withdrawn after experiencing significant pressure from his family.
Prior to publication, our editors recommended a shorter and more measured version of the essay for several editorial reasons. The author disagreed and insisted that the stronger language accurately reflected his anger and frustration with what he believes is a medical system that places profits ahead of people. We honored that decision and published the essay as a guest opinion representing the author’s views.
During the week it appeared on our website, the opinion was read by several thousand people and downloaded or shared more than 890 times. While the article has now been removed from the Estes Valley Voice website, we recognize that it has not disappeared from the public domain. As with most online content, copies have already been downloaded, shared, indexed by search engines, and archived elsewhere on the internet. Its digital footprint—and its role in the public conversation—will remain.
Balancing our responsibility to preserve the public record against our desire to minimize unnecessary harm in a complicated situation presented a difficult ethical dilemma.
After thoughtful deliberation, we concluded that honoring the author’s request represented the most compassionate course under the particular circumstances.
This decision should not be viewed as a change in the Estes Valley Voice’s editorial standards or policies regarding published content. Rather, it is a rare exception, not a precedent, made only after carefully weighing the competing principles of preserving the integrity of the public record and responding to an extraordinary request from an individual who sought our help.
What a terrible story, but I am not that surprised since this is how poorly corporate America treats people today. Corporations need to remember who pays the bills, their customers! They seem to have forgotten this important point in so many industries. People are getting very sick of this treatment. Large corporations should beware.
