Drought, fire risk and water conservation
After an unusually dry winter, our community is facing growing concern about water availability and fire danger as we move into the warmer months. Like many residents of Estes Park, I am hopeful for late-season snow or spring rains, but hope alone isn’t a strategy.
The stakes are especially high this year. Dry conditions not only strain our water supply but also increase wildfire risk. In a mountain community like ours, where fire danger is a real and recurring threat, water is essential not just for daily use but for protecting homes, businesses, and lives.
In a mountain community like ours, water is one of our most precious shared resources. Conservation is not just an environmental issue, it’s an economic and community one as well, impacting residents, local businesses, and the long-term sustainability of Estes Park.
If each of us takes a few practical steps now, we can help protect this vital resource and reduce risk as we move into the dry season.
Water conservation is something we can all participate in right now, with small steps that collectively make a meaningful difference. I’d like to offer a few practical and immediate ways residents and property owners can reduce water usage without sacrificing quality of life:
• Adjust irrigation schedules to early morning or evening to reduce evaporation
• Check for and repair leaks and drips in outdoor hoses, sprinklers, and indoor fixtures
• Replace high-water-use landscaping with native or drought-tolerant plants
• Use mulch to retain soil moisture and reduce watering needs
• Run dishwashers and laundry machines only with full loads
• Turn off water while brushing teeth or shaving
• Install low-flow shower heads and faucet aerators
With a few mindful adjustments, we can all contribute to protecting this vital resource during a dry season. I encourage our community to take simple steps now while we continue to hope for much-needed precipitation.
