“Commercial Sexual Activity” bill in the state legislature

Estes Park could get a new tourist attraction — prostitution — if a bill in the Colorado State Legislature — Decriminalize Adult Commercial Sexual Activity — SB26-097 is signed into law.

The bill is sponsored by Democratic state Reps. Lorena Garcia (House Dist. 35) and Rebekah Stewart (House Dist. 30), and Democratic Sens. Lisa Cutter (Senate Dist. 20) and Nick Hinrichsen (Senate Dist. 3).

That’s right, these lawmakers would like to decriminalize this noble way of making a living, both for the prostitutes and for their johns, because, after all, they’re consenting adults. They have even changed the name from prostitution to “commercial sexual activity” because why put any negative connotation to this practice?

The bill is sponsored by Democratic state Reps. Lorena Garcia (House Dist. 35) and Rebekah Stewart (House Dist. 30), and Democratic Sens. Lisa Cutter (Senate Dist. 20) and Nick Hinrichsen (Senate Dist. 3).

The law would preempt any home rule code, so municipalities couldn’t outlaw it. Make way, taffy, t-shirts, and Rocky Mountain National Park — here come the hookers! Colorado can become a haven not just for potheads, but also for a flood of prostitutes — I mean “commercial sex” workers — and their clients.

I have to wonder what motivates legislators to put this item on their busy agenda while at the same time killing Rep. Scott Bottoms’ bill that would have put child sex traffickers in prison for life, as Democrats recently did. How much more insane can this state go?
