Halloween — Oct. 31
So that ghosts, goblins, pirates, and princesses can fill Elkhorn Avenue on Halloween, the town will close the thoroughfare to all wheeled traffic. The street will be closed from East Riverside Drive to Spruce Drive at 4:15 p.m. on Oct. 31, and trick-or-treating is scheduled to start at 5 p.m.
For more than 40 years, Estes Park has celebrated the day with its downtown Elkhorn walk on October 31, regardless of the actual date it falls on. The tradition traces its roots to 1982, when Moses Street, a resident and photographer specializing in old-time, vintage-style portraits, opened his shop for trick-or-treating. The following year, Street invited fellow business owners to join him in providing a safe place for local children to observe the holiday. Since then, the activity has grown to a community-wide event.
In addition to the candy and other goodies distributed by merchants along the route, residents and others contribute to the cause with donations, a tradition that began in 2011. One collection point is located at Safeway, where shoppers can drop off their contributions in a marked container near the checkout stands.

Cleave Street repairs are expected to close the street beginning Nov. 3
The staff of the Town of Estes Park’s Public Works Department has been inspecting the status of numerous cracks in the new concrete on Cleave Street and will be working with the contractor, ABC Asphalt, to address the problem. The contractor has offered to remove and replace over 100 cracked concrete panels. It is anticipated that Cleave Street will be closed beginning Monday, Nov. 3. The repairs could take several weeks, and the closure may involve up to half of the street’s length at any given time. The Public Works department will provide more details as they become known. Business owners and residents with specific needs can share them with Jamin Rucker, a civil engineer with the Public Works Department, jrucker@estes.org, 970-699-6788, or Greg Muhonen, gmuhonen@estes.org, 970-577-3581, to coordinate with the contractor to arrange access.

Board of Adjustment member volunteer needed
The Town is seeking an individual interested in volunteering to serve on the Board of Adjustment.
Members of this Board consider and grant variances to zoning regulations that, when strictly enforced, would create an unnecessary hardship for a property owner, when such hardship is due to peculiar conditions of the land and not the fault of the property owner, and hear and decide appeals from property owners on decisions and interpretations made by town staff on zoning-related matters.
The Board meets at 9 a.m. on the first Tuesday of each month, as needed.
Those interested in serving on the Board have until Oct. 31 to apply for the position. Applications for the position are available online.
