A pyre made of shipping pallets stacked over 20 feet tall and surrounded by a dozen wooden cable reels in the Stanley Park parking lot was set on fire by members of the Estes Valley Fire Protection District after sunset Thursday night for the annual Bobcat homecoming bonfire.

More than 100 people gathered to watch flames shoot 50 feet into the air, creating fire tornadoes and generating intense heat as a dozen firefighters stood guard. The weather cooperated by providing a clear fall night with little wind, and a student rock band, the Snail Toads, played an edgy set of music in the background.
Friday morning, a homecoming parade escorted by Estes Park Police and EVFPD vehicles processed down Elkhorn Ave from the Dairy Queen parking lot and onto Highway 7 and ended at the schools.

The Estes Park Bobcats suffered a 41 to 7 defeat Friday night for their homecoming game at the hands of the visiting Flatirons Academy football team.
Homecoming festivities are slated to continue tonight with a dance at the high school from 8 to 11 p.m.
