Beginning Monday, June 2, and continuing through Thursday, June 5, crews will be doing rock scaling work on US 34 at mile post 77.4, which is a little over a mile down the hill from Drake in the Big Thompson Canyon.

Work will depend on the weather, and if crews are finished early, the closures won’t be needed.

According to Jared Fiel, a public information officer for the Colorado Department of Transportation, this work was scheduled quickly to mitigate what inspectors found was an area of rocks that needed to come down in a controlled way.

CDOT and contractor Simon Construction have recently completed improvements along US 36-Moraine Avenue and US 34- Big Thompson Avenue in Estes Park.

This $10 million project focused on improving roadway conditions, enhancing pedestrian accessibility and long-term infrastructure resilience through milling, paving, roadway approach improvements, and updated access points along US 36 from Marys Lake Road to Park River Place and US 34 from US 36 to Mall Road.

Earlier phases of the project included construction of a retaining wall east of River Rock Circle along US 36 to prevent soil erosion from damaging the roadway and nearby river. Additionally, CDOT made upgrades to meet Americans with Disabilities Act standards by installing accessible curb ramps at intersections including US 36 and Marys Lake Road, and US 36 and US 34.

Trail Ridge Road

Trail Ridge Road in Rocky Mountain National Park is open for the season. At this time, the Alpine Visitor Center and Trail Ridge Store are currently closed to all uses.

Because weather conditions may change rapidly at higher elevations, park visitors should be prepared to adjust travel plans accordingly at any time and are encouraged to call the park’s Trail Ridge Road recorded status phone line at (970) 586-1222.

Timed entry reservations are required for Trail Ridge Road from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.

There are two types of reservations available. One option is for the Bear Lake Road Corridor, which includes the entire corridor and the rest of the park. This reservation period is from 5 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Another timed-entry option is for the rest of Rocky Mountain National Park, excluding the Bear Lake Road corridor, and includes Trail Ridge Road. This reservation period is from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Permits issued using the reservation system will allow park visitors to enter the park within two-hour windows of availability. The reservation system will apply to all areas of the park. For information about timed entry, click here.
