The major Jewish holiday of Passover, which commemorates the exodus of ancient Israelites from slavery in Egypt, begins this evening at sunset and ends after nightfall on Sunday, April 20 (Nissan 14, 5785 to Nissan 22, 5785). During Passover, also known as Pesach in Hebrew, there are important holiday meals – including the Passover Seder – special prayer services, and abstention from work. In Israel, Passover is observed for seven days. Outside of Israel, in what is called the diaspora, Passover is observed for eight days.
Christians will observe Holy Week beginning tomorrow with what is called Palm or Passion Sunday. The period of Lent ends on Thursday, April 17, and the three-day period known as the Easter Triduum begins with Maundy or Holy Thursday, followed by Good Friday, Holy Saturday, and culminates with Easter Sunday on April 20.
