Forty readers from across the country—including Pittsburgh, Pa. and Walkersville, Md.—came to Estes Park for the midnight release of “Onyx Storm” hosted by Macdonald Book Shop Monday night.

This is the third in the third book in the Empyrean series authored by Colorado author Rebecca Yarros. Her first book in the series, “Fourth Wing,” was a New York Times Bestseller. Two additional books are planned in this series.

Bookshop owners Kevin and Staci Reed , who have owned the bookshop since 2020, have taken a page from a trend for introducing fantasy works in the same vein as was done when Harry Potter stories began being released 25 years ago.

Yarrow’s works are known for being launched to the public with midnight release parties usually held in early January, all over the United States. According to fans attending the Estes Park event, Yarrow is a skilled fantasy world builder because the characters have depth, color and some can telecommunicate with dragons. Several attendees suggested the series for people trying the romantic/fantasy genre—called “romantasy” in the trade—for the first time.

The book comes with a trigger warning: “‘Onyx Storm’ is a nonstop-thrilling adventure fantasy set in thebrutal and competitive world of a military college for dragon riders, which includes elements regarding war, battle, hand-to-hand combat, perilous situations, blood, intense violence, brutal injuries, death, poisoning, graphic language, and sexual activities that are shown on the page. Readers who may be sensitive to these elements, please take note, and prepare to enter Basgiath War College.”

With more than twenty published titles to her name, Yarros’s books have been at the top of the New York Times, USA Today, and Wall Street Journal bestselling list. As an author of fantasy romances, she loves to create military heroes. In real, she life been blissfully married to hers for over twenty years.

As the mother of six children, Yarros, who lives in Colorado Spring, is navigating the teenage years with two of her four hockey-playing sons. When she’s not writing, she is often found rink side. She also likes to find time to play the guitar or consume lots of coffee. As if her household was not busy enough, the family also includes stubborn English bulldogs, two feisty chinchillas, and a Maine Coon cat named Artemis, who rules them all.
