What constitutes a public board governed by Colorado’s Open Records Act, and who is responsible for adhering to Colorado Sunshine Laws?
Those are just two basic questions that will be answered when Jeff Roberts, executive director of the Colorado Freedom of Information Coalition, speaks during a two-hour “Let the Sunshine In” workshop at Town Hall from 2 to 4 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 1.
Executive sessions and what legally may be discussed during that type of forum, when the Sunshine Law is applicable, daisy chain meetings, and common violations of the Colorado Open Records Act are among the topics Roberts will discuss.
In fulfilling its mission as a public benefit corporation, the Estes Valley Voice is sponsoring the workshop in advance of this May’s special district elections. More than a dozen positions on five Estes Valley area taxing districts will be on ballots this spring. Additionally, dozens of appointed board and commission positions are filled on a continuous basis by oversight governmental agencies.
The workshop has been planned to assist the community in understanding more about how state laws dealing with open meetings affect even the smallest communities and public bodies.
Anyone currently serving on a public body, either in an appointed or elected position, along with those interested in potentially serving on a public body and those who are the custodians of board records, should attend. Anyone interested in the transparency processes of government operations is also welcome to attend the free workshop.
On the docket for elected positions this spring are positions on the Upper Thompson Sanitation District Board of Directors, the Estes Valley Fire Protection District board, the Estes Valley Recreation and Park District board, and the Park Hospital District which does business as Estes Park Health.
The workshop is free and open to interested members of the public, elected board members, appointed board and commission members, record custodians, and individuals considering running for office.
