Authorities from Rocky Mountain National Park, the Larimer County Sheriff’s Office, and the Estes Park Police Department took Hudson, Colo. resident Wayde Thyfault, 23, into custody this morning shortly after 10 a.m. after he had eluded capture overnight.

According to authorities, Thyfault was wanted in connection with the hit and run crash that occurred Sunday evening near the Beaver Meadows Visitor Center. Three people were injured in the crash and transported to the hospital. One individual was reported to be in critical condition.

After the crash, the driver of the white pickup truck, believed to be Thyfault, fled the scene. He was not wearing a shirt and did not have shoes on and witnesses said the driver injured his head when the vehicles collided.

Construction workers with Craftsman Built Home and Remodels of Estes Park who are building a home at 1561 High Dr. found Thyfault Monday morning hiding in a cabin on the property and contacted law enforcement. They noticed a window and screen that had been pushed in and realized that someone was hiding inside one of the cabins.

The property belongs to Jeff and Gina Paige. Last night, Jeff Paige provided the Estes Valley Voice with photos and an interview about the crash scene.

Thyfault had positioned a chair against a door to make it difficult to enter the cabin. A construction worker, who declined to be identified by name, said Thyfault had a sizable head wound and was wearing a pair of shoes he found in the cabin when law enforcement officers apprehended him.

Thyfault led officers on a pursuit across RMNP Sunday after he entered from the Grand Lake entrance. Authorities did a property-by-property search in the residential area near High Drive Sunday night but did not find Thyfault during the overnight hours. Thyfault is a suspect in connection with a in Grand County felony burglary case that is under investigation.
